Post-Medieval — Early 17th century; 1600-1635
Cruciform bezel
An enamelled gold finger ring set with Indian diamonds. The bezel is set with five table-cut diamonds in the form of a cross, and is embellished on the underside with champleve mauve/blue enamel and a quatrefoil flower in gold. The hoop is set with eighteen table-cut diamonds (one missing). All of the stones are mounted in raised, closed-back, rubover settings and there is some black setting material in the empty collet. There is some loss of enamel. The design and settings are typical of the early 17th century but the mauve-blue enamel is unusual in English jewellery, and is paralleled only by the ‘Lyte Jewel' in the British Museum, the gift of James I to Thomas Lyte in c.1610.
