Post-Medieval — 17th century
Plate
The crescent is the cadency mark of a second son but was also used as a mark of difference by all the descendants of a second son, becoming in effect a mark of difference for an entire cadet branch of a family. Searches in the Heralds’ Visitations of London under the name Knolles and variant spellings of that name, has proved a fruitless line of research. Arms answering this description appear as a quartering in those of warcop recorded at the Visitation of 1583-5 of Yorkshire. The records in the College of Arms give no indication as to which family this quartering represents, but the version published by the Harleian Society attributes them to Sandford. None of the Sandford arms in the Visitation records, however, are like those represented on the plate.
