Quart capacity tankard
The mark is that of John Quick of London, OP3807 [LTP591] who was free in 1699, struck his touch in 1701 and was buried in St. Giles Cripplegate in 1722. There were a number of taverns in Southwark called the Bell – see Lillywhite, 1972, 34- 2885-2898. George Sterry, brewer, appears in the annual lists of people in Clink Liberty in the Parish of St. Saviour's Southwark who were qualified to serve as juror between 1696 and 1703 (Surrey History Centre Quarter Sessions Records QS3/10A/1). He died, aged 78, and was buried on 16 March 1736 (Parish Register, St. Saviour's Southark). His occupation was given as naylor, shipwright, brewer and victualler.'
