View of the Iron Bridge intended to be erected on the Thames from Southwark
This panoramic view of the Thames includes the at-the-time proposed Southwark Bridge.
The Southwark Bridge Company was formed in 1813 in response to growing demands for a bridge to be erected between London Bridge and Blackfriars. The three-arch cast iron bridge, which was built by the architect John Rennie between 1814 and 1819, was the largest bridge of its kind. It was replaced in the 20th century by the present five-arch steel bridge.
