Port & River — 1862
Dinner menu, Whitebait Dinner Menu
A printed Bill of Fare or menu produced for a Whitebait dinner given for the wardens of St Saviour's parish, Southwark at the 'Ship' tavern, Greenwich, dated July 10th 1862. Freshly caught Whitebait from the river, was the main feature of these dinners, which became very popular as part of boating excursions on the Thames in the 19th century. Charles Dickens records attending several such dinners at Greenwich in the 1840s and 1850s. Whitebait dinners also became popular with Members of Parliament, celebrating the end of parliamentary sessions. St Saviours was a parish to the west of London Bridge, founded in 1541. It became part of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark in 1900. This dinner was part of an Annual 'Visitation' or inspection by the wardens.
