Greenwich
Greenwich is a borough in south-east London with miles of Thames waterfront, expansive parks and large areas of regeneration. It lays claim to significant moments of royal, scientific and culinary history.
It’s the home of Greenwich Mean Time, the Royal Observatory and the birthplace of Tudor monarchs Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. Today the Old Royal Naval College stands on the former site of Greenwich Palace. But its gardens, once Henry’s private hunting grounds, are open to all as Greenwich Park.
Downstream is Woolwich, where Henry VIII established a dockyard in 1512 to build ships for his navy. A nearby gunwharf grew to become the Royal Arsenal, making munitions for almost 300 years.
Woolwich is also where McDonald’s opened its first UK restaurant, in 1974.
