The Coffee House
John Rider issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his coffee house in Chancery Lane, Middlesex. The depiction of a Turk's head on the token is a reference to the Turkish coffee sold at the premises.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 521; Obv inscription: Jon Rider / at ye Coffee / House at the / Rolls gate in / Chancery / Lane (in 6 lines of cursive script, in field); Rev inscription: HIS / HALF / PENY (in three lines of Roman captials either side of device) Device =A Turk's head (in field).
There is another similar token in the museum collection, NN16640. See also Bryant Lillywhite, London Coffee Houses, 1963, No. 1076 and No. 1392. Chancery Lane lies within the London boroughs of Camden, City of Westminster and City of London, in the ward of Farringdon Without, having formerly lain across, Holborn and Westminster in Middlesex, and the ward of Farringdon Without, in the City of London.
