Posy ring; mourning ring
A gold mourning ring and posy ring combined, of D-shaped section, decorated externally with a central rib flanked by diagonal lines. Engraved within the band is an inscription in French 'Je ne C[r]oisse Tout seule' with a winged angel in white enamel. Attached to outer edge is a small ring for suspension.There are no maker's marks.
Posies (simple rhymes) or mottoes were applied to rings from the early medieval to nineteenth centuries. They were often exchanged as love tokens but could also affirm religious devotion or social allegiance. Some of the posies which were commonly inscribed inside the hoop, conveyed a wealth of meaning that required sophisticated decoding and understanding. French was routinely spoken and used by the upper classes in medieval and early modern England and this inscription reads 'I think only of one'
