Saxon & Medieval — Middle Saxon; 8th-9th century
Pin
This incomplete pin is made from bone. There are two pieces, and one part missing. The head of the pin is expanded and triangular in shape, with a perforation. This shape was inspired by the natural shape of the pig tibia, but this has been cut from shafts of limb bones. The flat end at the top of such expanded-head pins are often decorated, and this pin has a ring and dot pattern. The shaft is roughly round. Pins were used before the general use of buttons in order to fasten loose clothing, in addition to brooches, straps and ties.
