The Black Bell
William Bolton, a chandler issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the sign of the Black Bell, in Petticoat Lane (now Middlesex Street), Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2211; Obv inscription: WILL.BOLTON.AT.YE.BLAK.BEL (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A bell (in field); Rev inscription: IN.PETTYCOAT.LANE.CHANDLR (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY / W.K.B. (in four lines of Roman capitals with triad of initials as bottom, in field).
Petticoat Lane, now Middlesex Street, lies in the City of London, having formerly been part of Whitechapel, Middlesex.
