The Lion
Tristram May and Henry Sell, two brewers, issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for their business in Norton Folgate, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2091; Obv inscription: TRISTRAM. MAY. &. HENRY. SELL (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A lion rampant (in field); Rev inscription: BREWERS.IN.NORTON.FOLGATE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = THEIR / HALFE / PENY / 1667 (in four lines of Roman capitals, in field).

Norton Folgate used to be an area in the parish of St Botolph, in Stepney, Middlesex; the name survives in a road which forms part of the boundary between the City of London and Tower Hamlets.
