The Black Talbot
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued for a business at the sign of the Black Talbot (a now extinct breed of hunting dog), in Norton Folgate, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2087; Obv inscription: AT.THE.BLACK.TALBVT (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A dog (in field); Rev inscription: IN.NORTVN.FOLGAT (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = I.I.H. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
Norton Folgate used to be an area in the parish of St Botolph, in Stepney, Middlesex; the name survives in a road which forms part of the boundary between the City of London and Tower Hamlets.
