The Bird in Hand
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued at the sign of the Bird In Hand, in East Smithfield, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 925; Obv inscription: AT.THE.BIRD.IN.HAND (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A hand holding a bird (in field); Rev inscription: IN.EAST.SMITFIELD (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = M.E.H. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
East Smithfield, lies in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, having formerly been part of, Stepney, Middlesex.
