Facon de Venise goblet
The stem and foot of a goblet found in 1939 on the site of All Hallows Church, Lombard Street demolished for an extension to Barclays Bank. In the winter of 1940 workmen digging just outside the south-east corner of the church broke through an old chalk wall at a depth of 18ft below Gracechurch Street. To the east of this wall, adjoining Gracechurch Street, were deposits backfilling a 16th century cellar including pottery, tobacco pipes and over 1000 fragments of glass vessels, now known as the Gracechurch Street Hoard. The assemblage includes some 16th century items but most of the finds date to the early 17th century and seem to constitute the stock-in-trade of a glass-seller.The cellar contents had been levelled and covered with probable debris from the Great Fire of 1666.
