Post-Medieval — C.1650-1750; late 17th early 18th century
Pint capacity tankard
A conical tankard of pint capacity with a thickened everted rim and decorative fillets around the lower body and base. The hollow-cast swept handle has escutcheon and flush attachments (the latter possibly achieved by flattening a standard ball terminal). There is a crowned X and crowned ‘WR’ verification mark just below rim to the left of the handle. The acutely angled thumbplate is marked with an ownership triad of ‘B’ over ‘I’ and ‘E’ and the body is inscribed ‘bues’. A further inscription underneath the base reads: ‘Jas Bues Fox White Street Southwark’ and ‘bues’. There is a worn circular beaded touch inside base of an acorn flanked by the initials ‘R and ‘I’ and there are hallmarks with an ‘X’ near the handle for Robert Iles, London, OP2522, LTP520, who was active from 1696 until his death in November, 1735.
