This is a sample of black ebony labelled for the use of people working at the London docks. They compared batches of ebony arriving from Asia, South America and the Caribbean with this sample. Most hardwoods, such as ebony, mahogany and teak, were unloaded at the West India Docks, which was equipped with specially designed cranes and sheds.
