Port & River — 1900-1935
Sample, silk sample
Sample of plaited silk imported through the East India Docks from Bengal. It was the East India Company itself which expanded the Bengal silk industry in the 1770s by introducing new reeling techniques from Italy. When the East India Company abandoned its interest in Silk in the 1830s the Bengali industry continued successfully in its own right.
