Sample of coiled tape chassum or waste silk imported through the East India Docks from Bengal.('Chassum' is the term used in West Bengal to denote waste silk) Waste silk is usually gathered from the inner and outer layers of the silk-worm's cocoon, which are of a coarser quality than the mid-layer. Waste silk is used in paper production or for making fabric as a handicraft.
