Sample of belladonna root imported through the St Katherine Docks, probably from India. Belladonna also grows naturally in the United Kingdom, and is better known as deadly nightshade. Most parts of the plant are highly poisonous. Atropine, extracted from the root, is used medicinally in the treatment of a number of ailments, including ocular conditions. It is also used as a preventive against nerve gas attack.
