Port & River — 1876-1900
Lamp, 2 historic hand oil lamps mounted on board
A coopers lamp used in the wine and spirit vaults at the London Docks. The long handles enables the coopers to carry out rapid high and low level inspections of the casks for any sign of wine seepage or shrinkage of the wooden staves. This type of lamp was probably used throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and is depicted in an illustration of Pierce Egan's book 'Life in London...' (1821)
