Headdress frame, tire
An elaborate copper alloy wire headdress composed almost entirely of copper alloy. Bejwelled precious metal head-attires were especially popular in the late 16th century. Many examples of twisted wire ornaments have been found on the Thames foreshore. Tire-makers worked with hair and wigs but also produced elaborate head-pieces or 'tires' of finely wrought metal intertwines with thread and jewels. From 1602-4 Shakespeare lodged with Christopher and Marie Mountjoy, tire-makers, in a small house on the corner of Monkwell Street and Silver Street in the Parish of St Olaves.
