Post-Medieval — Late 17th century
Solitaire finger ring
Gold memento mori finger ring set with rock crystal with a gold filigree backing. The shoulders of the hoop are engraved with a foliate pattern and enamelled in black. Mourning rings like this one, black scarves and hatbands were distributed to friends and relatives at funerals as a memento of the decreased person. The quality and value of the ‘memento mori’ (‘remember you must die’) varied according to the recipients’ relationship with the deceased.
