Post-Medieval — Late 16th-early 17th century
Cup, wine taster
A wine taster with a cast-decorated boss, slender foot ring and turned base. The bowl has an interesting profile - the top (5 mm below the rim) is straight, the bowl then curves downwards and finally inwards towards the pedestal foot which has a slightly recurved basal edge. Similar small vessels called ‘Drinkschaaltje’ were made in the Netherlands during the late 16th and early 17th centuries - see Dubbe p.147, illustrating a similar bowl with a larger 110mm diameter bowl. (Dubbe, 1978). Similar Bacchus motives cast in relief were also common on dishes in Nuremberg during the same period. See illustrations in Hintze. (Hintze, 1921.)
