Measure, baluster measure
A baluster measure with a carinated rim, flared base and missing lid and thumbpiece. The swept strap handle has a ball terminal and diamond-shaped escutcheon attachment. There is a WR verification mark on the rim to the right of the handle and the body is inscribed ‘R A Black Dog St Giles’. Lillywhite, 1972, p 48 -3263 and p, 154 – 5844 refers to a Black Dog tavern near Newgate (the adjoining parish to St Giles Cripplegate). A ½ penny token was issued from this establishment by Nicholas Roys (acc. nos. NN17936 and NN17937 in the Museum of London’s collection).
