Triangular standing salt
Tin-glazed earthenware standing salt of triangular form, made from pierced moulded panels of floral design on a solid slab base. The top has a trefoil shaped depression decorated in the centre with the arms of the Salters' Company (salt pouring from three salts) and their motto 'SAL SAPIT OMNIA' (meaning ‘salt seasons everything’). This vessel would have been used to contain salt and would have stood on the table during meals. Salt was a costly commodity. A prized condiment and preservative, it was also used as a chemical reagent for dyeing cloth and tanning leather. Elizabeth I granted the Salters’ a charter in 1559.
