Powdered manganese bottle
Wine bottle with a narrow neck, string rim, strap handle, globular body and pedestal foot in tin-glazed earthenware. The entire surface is decorated with powdered manganese oxide with cobalt blue brushwork encircling the lip and base. The decoration on this bottle was achieved by sprinkling the powdered pigment on the glaze before firing. 17th-century wines were not matured as they are today and were sometimes infused with fruits and herbs and sweetened with sugar.
