A well-known illustrator and cartoonist, Watts studied at London's Slade School of Fine Art. His first drawing was published in Punch in 1912 and, despite an eight-year break due to the First World War, they subsequently appeared regularly until his death.

Watt's cartoons show an acute observation of class distinctions. He highlighted differences in accent, vocabulary, dress and drinking habits.

Never cruel or spiteful, Watts' cartoons poked fun at social climbers, nouveau riche, day-trippers, hen-pecked husbands and affected young men.
