Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1866
A Henpecked Husband
This watercolour is most likely a copy after one of Rowlandson's designs as the watermark in the paper is 1866. On a bright, sunny day where the suggestion is one of high temperatures it shows a large, overbearing woman wearing Regency fashion and wearing a wildly plumed headress accompanied on her shopping trip by her subservient husband who carries her parasol, shopping and basket. In the background is an Ordinary which serves on Sundays at Two. As the sign for this eating establishment is a swan the indication might be that that was its name.
