Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1810-1820
West Front of St. Paul's
Pugin's watercolour shows the familiar west front of St. Paul's Cathedral. The dome of the cathedral can be seen looming over the portico, flanked by the two towers.
During his lifetime, Augustus Charles Pugin was a well-known topographical draughtsman. A former student of the Royal Academy, he contributed illustrations to a range of publications, including 'Specimens of Gothic Architecture' in 1821, 'Repository of the Arts' in 1825 and 'Architectural Antiquities of Great Britain' in the following year. His son was the architect Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, designer of the Houses of Parliament.
