The Martyrdome of Katherin Hut, Joane Hornes, Elizabeth Thackwell
Woodcut of the martyrdom of Katherin Hut, Joane Hornes and Elizabeth Thackwell. These women were Protestants who were burnt at the stake in Smithfield on 16 May 1556.
The Protestant king Edward VI was succeeded in 1553 by his sister, Mary, who wished to restore Catholicism as the state religion. Mary tried to re-open the religious houses and ordered the restoration of all church ornaments and vessels necessary for mass to be restored. Many public executions of professed Protestants were held at Smithfield.
