All Hallows the Great, Lower Thames Street
This drawing by Thomas Hosmer Shepherd, shows Lower Thames Street and the tower of All-Hallows-the-Great. The church, built by Sir Christopher Wren following the Great Fire in 1666, was demolished in 1894 to allow the widening of the street.
A drawing master and topographical draughtsman, Shepherd was commissioned by a number of publishers to produce views of London. He collaborated with his elder brother on images to illustrate 'Repository of the Arts' and contributed drawings and engravings to both 'London' and 'Illustrated London News'.
