Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1818-12
Whitechapel School
This drawing of Whitechapel School is one of a number of works by the topographical draughtsman Robert Schnebbelie in the Museum of London's collection.
At the time of Schnebbelie's drawing East London was one of the poorest parts of the capital. A number of new schools were set up there by the National Society for Promoting the Education of the Poor and the British and Foreign Schools Society.
Although funds were available for school buildings at this time, little money was provided for the teaching itself. The most cost-effective approach was for older children to act as monitors and teach the younger ones.
