Sheath, dolabra sheath
A copper alloy side and loop from an axe (dolabra) sheath with coppery rivets surviving in situ to which the horizontal guard would have been attached at right angles.
These metal sheathings came in three parts, consisting of of two side pieces hinged to a base, the side pieces having curled necks so that the sheath could be tied in place. They varied quite considerably in size and form but these differences do not seem to have been functional.
Each legionary soldier carried a digging tool and axe for building defences and general construction work.
