Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1851
Billingsgate Market, 1851
'Billingsgate Market, 1851'. As late as 1840 Billingsgate consisted only of sheds, and the market seen here was designed in 1850 by Bunning, the City Architect, who also built the Coal Exchange. The market was greatly enlarged in the 1870s owing to the increase in trade, and Bunning's building was replaced by one designed by Horace Jones in 1877.
Bunning was presumably the painter of this watercolour as he is described as the artist of several prints depicting buildings he designed and the work is attributed to him on the back.
