Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1730-1770
Isle of Dogs Opposite Greenwich
Scott’s drawing shows a party of people being ferried across the river. One of the oarsmen looks over his shoulder to check direction whilst the other pushes his hat back from his brow. The background is a study of wharves and shipping at the Isle of Dogs. As usual, Scott has used wash to create broad forms, without worrying too much about detail.
From 1726 onwards, Scott produced both seascapes and pictures of battles fought at sea. He was patronised by a number of distinguished clients and in 1746 was elected a governor of Foundling Hospital. Scott was also on the committee which proposed the foundation of the Royal Academy in 1755.
