Paintings, Prints & Drawings — 1781-1820
Blackwall and Limehouse Church
This view of the River Thames at Blackwall depicts Limehouse Church in the distance. Although the foreground has been left unfinished, details such as the figures and boats in the distance have been clearly rendered. The restricted pallette, coupled with the unfinished nature of the watercolour, suggests that it may have been painted on location.
George Bulteel Fisher constructed his drawings 'in a series of a few superimposed vertical planes, like stage scenery'. He served in Canada, where he worked as an artist, before establishing himself as a landscape painter. As well as views of London, Fisher also depicted scenes in Scotland, Durham and Portsmouth. His elder brother was John Fisher, a long-term patron and friend of the landscape painter, John Constable.
