Port & River — 1839
Extra labourer's ticket
An Extra Labourer's ticket issued to James Kent, for employment at the St Katherine's Dock, in April 1839. Kent was 29 years of age, and his position as an Extra Labourer put him on the lowest priority for employment at the Dock. While all of the dock companies relied heavily on casual labour, the St Katherine's Dock Company were slightly better employers in keeping a pool of preferred labourers and making less use of high numbers of casual workers. The ticket has been heavily used as James Kent would have had to carry it with him while working.
