Port & River — 1863
Dinner menu, Whitebait Dinner Menu
A printed and embossed Bill of Fare or menu produced for a Whitebait dinner given by John Fowler Esq at the 'Ship' tavern, Greenwich, dated July 4th 1863. Freshly caught Whitebait from the river, was the main feature of these dinners, which became very popular as part of boating excursions on the Thames in the 19th century. Charles Dickens records attending several such dinners at Greenwich in the 1840s and 1850s. Whitebait dinners also became popular with Members of Parliament, celebrating the end of parliamentary sessions. The diner is probably the railway engineer John Fowler, later the first Baronet Sir John Fowler, who was responsible for the building of the Metropolitan Line and other London railway projects.
