Port & River — 1861
Dinner menu, Whitebait Dinner Menu
A printed Bill of Fare or menu produced for a Whitebait dinner given for the Gentlemen of the Metropolitan Board of Works at the 'Ship' tavern, Greenwich, dated July 24th 1861. Freshly caught Whitebait from the river, was the main feature of these dinners, which became very popular as part of boating excursions on the Thames in the 19th century. Charles Dickens records attending several such dinners at Greenwich in the 1840s and 1850s. Whitebait dinners also became popular with Members of Parliament, celebrating the end of parliamentary sessions. The Metropolitan Board of Works was London's first city-wide governmental organisation, established in 1855. It was replaced by the London County Council in 1889.
