Port & River — C. 1865
Dinner menu, Whitebait Dinner Menu
A hand written Whitebait dinner menu from the 'Ship' tavern, Greenwich, probably from 1865. Freshly caught Whitebait from the river, was the main feature of these dinners, which became very popular as part of boating excursions on the Thames in the 19th century. Charles Dickens records attending several such dinners at Greenwich in the 1840s and 1850s. This example offered six courses. The first three featured fish dishes, the fourth a meat course; and the last two sweets.
