Archaeology — 17th century
Brick
Six fragments of burnt brick found on an archaeological excavation at Peninsula House on Pudding Lane near London Bridge. Here archaeologists discovered the cellar of a shop that had burned down during the Great Fire of London. The Great Fire started in a bakery on Pudding Lane, very close to the site of the shop. The cellar contained the remains of twenty barrels of pitch, a very inflammable substance used for waterproofing boats. The fire damaged the brick floor of the cellar - many of the bricks were burned or cracked. Once the Great Fire was over, rubble from destroyed buildings was pushed into their cellars and new houses were built on top.
