Archaeology — 1852-1860
Jug
This transfer-printed whiteware jug was found on an archaeological excavation in Church Street, Isleworth, close to Kew Gardens. The teapot is marked 'Copeland Late Spode' and has a registered mark for 1852.
The Spode pottery factory was set up by Josiah Spode in Stoke-on-Trent in 1770 and produced high quality ceramics to rival Chinese porcelain. In 1778 he opened a shop and showroom in London so that he could promote and sell his products more easily to wealthy London customers. In 1833 the company was sold to W. T. Copeland and Garrett and it remained in the Copeland family until 1966.
