Archaeology — 19th century
Mug
This transfer-printed whiteware mug was found on an archaeological excavation in Church Street, Isleworth, close to Kew Gardens. The mug is decorated in blue with a scene of a man wearing an apron and holding a broom in one hand and his hat out in the other. A lady in early 19th century dress stands next to him and appears to be putting money in his hat. At the top of the scene are the words 'THANK YOU MADAM', which suggests that the man is a crossing sweeper and has just cleared the path for the lady who is tipping him.
