Curse
A curse inscribed on an irregularly shaped piece of lead - oblong with very distorted edges. Inscribed on both sides, with an invocation to Metunus, possibly meaning Neptune, to avenge a wrong doing. One side is written retrograde.
Inscription: (Obv) TIBIROGOME TV | NVSVMVENDIC | ASDEISTENV | MENEMEVEN | DICSANTEQ. | DVENDIENO | VEMROGOTE | NETVNVSVTV | MIVEN ...AS | ANTEQC | VENDINDVE | M;
Translation: I ask you, Neptune, that you avenge me on him by your power, avenge me before the ninth day. I ask you, Neptune, that you avenge me before the ninth day. (Reverse translation): The Silvias are overcome by (with?) unloosed bile. Avitus son of Silvicola has been overcome. Melisso has been given. Mansuetus. Pidimus son of Antonius. Xanthus. Bassianus. Varascus has been given. I have conquered you utterly(?). Sanctinus.
A prayer to Neptune (god of the sea) is appropriate given London's trade contacts.
