Case, knife case

Catalogue notes by Santina Levey. Sheath-shaped knife case of card with two compartments for knives. Covered with cream satin and embroidered with green, pink, blue and cream silk in satin stitch. The motifs are outlined with couched silver thread and the ground is decorated with spangles, each secured with a piece of metal purl. The top and side seams are covered with silver-gilt braid. The lower end is decorated with two large interlocking loops of metal thread decorated with a short tassel of multi-coloured silk thread. An additional knob-tassel with an embroidered cover and plaited ends has been added at a later date. Two similar, but not matching, knob tassels have been attached to the plaited silk and metal thread handle, which is probably also a later replacement. Both sides of the case are decorated with a vertical row of four stiff floral sprigs (thistle, rose, carnation, tulip and unidentified flowers) surmounted by a stylised cloud and rain drops. Condition: fairly good. The satin cover is begining to split. Many of the spangles are missing. The threads holding the loops at the bottom end are separating.
