The Cow
Fran (Frances?) Smith issued this trade token, worth a farthing for their business at the sign of the Red Cow in Budge Row.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 442; Obv inscription: FRAN.SMITH.AT.YE.RED (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A cow (in field); Rev inscription: IN.BVDGE.ROWE (in Roman capitals, in field) = The Girdlers' arms (in field).
The arms of the Worshipful Company of Girdlers are: On a field of six pieces azure and or three gridirons (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by Heather Child...(London, 1960). Budge Row lies in Cordwainer Ward, in the City of London.
