The Centrally Planned London Underground Map
This drawing takes the existing underground map and recreates the system in circular form. All the stations are included and connect just as they do in reality. Dant's starting point for the work was an attempt to blend two incompatible philosophical and artistic concepts in the creation of the work. To do this he applied the 16th Century Renaissance model of the harmonious system to the familiar modernist form of London's iconic tube map. According to the artist, 'the exercise can be seen as embodying the 21st century's suspicion of idealism having parity with 16th century theories of universal order'.
