Pad, deal porter's backing pad
A deal porter working at the Surrey Commercial Docks would have worn this backing pad across his shoulder. The docks specialised in the handling and storage of timber. Deal Porters were responsible for unloading the imported planks from ship to dockside. They carried the heavy bundles of wood on one shoulder and wore backing pads for protection. Their work was highly dangerous and required skill and strength to prevent personal injury or damage to the wood.
