Social History — 1866-1875
Buckle, belt buckle
Pressed copper alloy cricketer's buckle, with traces of gilt. The buckle depicts a cricketer within a circular frame, with cricket balls at each of four corners. The cricketer sports a large moustache, and is dressed in a pill-box style cap, loose shirt, and loose trousers. He carries a long-handled cricket bat, and is poised to strike the ball. Behind him are the stumps, and scrolls frame the scene, on a background of fine, horizontal lines. The hinged part of the buckle is broken off. There was no standard form of dress for cricketers at this time, but many wore elaborate belts, sometimes woven in Berlin woolwork and with ornate buckles depicting cricketing scenes.
