A scene from Thackeray's The History of Henry Esmond
Four horsemen (highwaymen?) in 17th century clothing, meet at a crossroad. Two men brandish pistols, one of whom shots the other and the wounded man in the foreground falls from his horse. Register entry: Pen and ink sketch, 'A scene from Esmond, Thackeray'.
Ink drawing by George Du Maurier, engraved as an illustration for an edition of William Makepeace Thackeray's novel, 'The History of Henry Esmond' (1852). It depicts Father Holt shooting an officer.
